Who Builds MUME?

Implementors (I)

MUME's active Implementers are Manwë and CryHavoc. Implementors are the final authority on what happens on MUME. They decide everything from rules and punishments to what areas will be built and the effects and course of different MUME races—basically they chart the future of MUME.

Arata (A)

MUME's active Arata all have different primary functions but also function a bit like Implementors as they have a secondary role in deciding what does and does not happen/change. The active Arata and their roles are as follows (Note: They all have many other duties):

  • Arata of Code (Ac) - Nienor: Handles MUME's mudlle and other effects. Nienor is also responsible for working with a good deal of MUME's code.
  • Arata of Objects/Mobiles (Ao/m) - Frór: Manages the creation/approval of mobiles and objects both new and current and their stats. Frór is also responsible for working with a good deal of MUME's code.
  • Arata of Zones (Az) - Námo: Plans new areas along with the Implementors, assigns supervisors to manage the projects and approves the superzone (such as "Rohan") plans for the area. Also ensures that MUME holds to its "worldmap" which as accurately as possible to scale replicates Tolkien's world.
  • Arata of Justice (Aj) - Staer: In charge of law and order and adherence to MUME's rules and policy. The Aj also investigates other concerns as needed.
  • Other Active Arata (A): Dain, Ilie, Yavanna.

Valar (V)

Valar are MUME's active Zone Supervisors. A Valar works closely with the Arata of Zones and is in charge of a specific superzone. They plan the superzone map, room counts, and theme with the Az. They also assign areas/zones within the superzone to Maiar building teams, supervise the building process, manage room additions, approve zone items/mobs, and write or oversee mudlle for the superzone.

Maiar (M)

Maiar are MUME's builders. Their primary function is to build rooms, write room descriptions, add details, write mudlle for the room, and suggest ideas for zone objects/mobs to their Valar. They work closely with their supervising Valar.

How MUME is Built

Building on MUME is a thorough and structured process to maintain high quality and consistency with Tolkien's Middle-earth lore:

  1. Superzone Selection & Research: Implementors and Arata select an area based on player needs, geographic progression, and lore. Extensive research is conducted using Tolkien's texts and maps.
  2. Superzone Mapping & Allocation: The Arata of Zones maps out the grid, room layout, and boundaries to maintain accurate geographic scale across Middle-earth.
  3. Room Construction & Description: Maiar draft vivid, atmospheric descriptions following strict guidelines to fit MUME's immersive world.
  4. Mobiles & Objects Creation: Items and NPCs are designed with appropriate statistics, approved by the Arata of Objects/Mobiles, and given unique behaviors via Mudlle scripts.
  5. Testing & Balancing: The zone undergoes rigorous testing for bugs, balance, terrain movement, and quest functionality before being opened to the public.
